| The Taranaki region is located on the West Coast of the North Island and is the major energy and dairy region of New Zealand. The Taranaki Daily News is the local paper and has a comprehensive cover of local, national and international news and photographs. It is one of only eight morning newspapers in New Zealand and one of the largest provincials. The Taranaki Daily News boasts a strong market penetration of 60% or 55,000* readers 15+. With a circulation of 24,340**, the Taranaki Daily News circulates throughout Taranaki and the King Country and is produced in one edition. There is dense coverage throughout Taranaki and it is sent as far afield as Waitotara in the south and Awakino in the north. To service the Taranaki region The Taranaki Daily News maintains a branch office in Hawera, and agents in Taumarunui, Waitara, Inglewood, Patea and Opunake. In the New Plymouth head office reporters are engaged in gathering general news while specialist reporters produce material for sports, racing and farming sections. All sections of the Taranaki Daily News editorial operations are computer driven and direct input by reporters has seen typewriters disappear into museums, layout is done totally on screen and photographers are now scanning direct from negatives, meaning there is no need any more for hard copy prints. The newspaper has a strong graphics capability and it is also able to access all Reuters international photographs and graphics constantly throughout each day as soon as they arrive in New Zealand. The library operation was based on an electronic system early in 1996. A major revamp of the content and look of the newspaper has been carried out and lead to a raft of design accolades in several premier news media awards in the following years as well as a series of individual awards for literary excellence. Recognising the impact of farming in the region and coupled with strong advertising support, The Taranaki Daily News is able to devote much to the news generated from this area of activity. The regular weekly Thursday Farmer section is the largest of any newspaper in New Zealand. |
