Family Room for Ronald McDonald House thanks to Round the Bays

02 Nov 2010

A family room at the newly developed Ronald McDonald House Grafton Mews has just been completed with the help of $60,000 raised by participants in the Ports of Auckland Round The Bays fun run, which took place around Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour in March this year.

Currently capacity at Ronald McDonald House Auckland is 48 rooms, and the new Grafton Mews facility will bring RMHA owned capacity to 66 rooms.

CEO of Ronald McDonald House Wayne Howett says the family room will sleep up to five people, enabling more families to stay at the House when their child is being treated at Starship Children’s Hospital.

“Naturally parents want to be at the side of their child in hospital, but many out of town parents can’t afford the accommodation costs, “ Mr Howett says. “Being able to provide a place to stay free of charge, right by the hospital, takes some of the stress out of what is a very
heartwrenching time,” he says.

“Ronald McDonald House would like to say a big thank you to Fairfax Media and the Ports of Auckland Round The Bays for generously giving these proceeds from this year’s run - without Round The Bays this room would not have been possible”.

Fairfax Media CEO Allen Williams says it is wonderful that over 70,000 people have contributed to the family room through Round The Bays. “Net proceeds from Round The Bays goes to helping children’s charities and this is a truly worthy cause,” Mr Williams says. “It is so fitting that so many people have helped to make this room happen, because the room will benefit many New Zealand families,” he says.

Ports of Auckland Chief Executive Jens Madsen says it was wonderful to be part of an iconic event that benefited the city in so many ways. “Thanks really goes to the tens-of-thousands of people who participated last year,” Mr Madsen says.

Fairfax Media with the Sunday Star-Times has a long and proud association with Round the bays through its Auckland Suburban Newspaper network, which has managed the fun run since 1988.
