Tuesday, 1 July 2003 One
of New Zealand’s most senior news media executives, Ian Wells, has announced
his retirement. Mr
Wells was most recently Group Advertising and Business Development Director
with Independent Newspapers Limited, which yesterday sold its publishing
assets to Fairfax New Zealand Limited. He
also announced his retirement as a director of Sky Network Television Limited. Prior
to taking up his appointment at INL head office, Mr Wells was general manager
for 15 years of Wellington Newspapers Limited, then publishers of the Dominion
and Evening Post, and before that was business manager and advertising manager
for the Wellington publications. Mr
Wells retires after 38 years in the newspaper industry with the Wellington
division of INL and latterly INL head office. INL
Chief Executive Officer Peter Wylie said Mr Wells’ enormous experience in
the advertising arena had been of great benefit over many years to the group. He
had also given long service to the newspaper industry through his roles with
the Newspaper Publishers Association and Newspaper Advertising Bureau, and as
chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations. ``Ian
has been a tremendous servant of INL and the newspaper industry and we owe him
a debt of thanks for his long and distinguished service,’’ Mr Wylie said. Mr
Wells has also had a prominent role in the Wellington community, having served
for 27 years as chairman of New Zealand Tennis and had interests in many other
sports. He is currently on the board of Positively Wellington Tourism and NZ
Soccer. ``I have seen the development of INL over time to become one of the great New Zealand companies. The sale of the company to Fairfax will ensure its continued advancement which will be exciting for New Zealand’s media scene and its media-hungry public,’’ Mr Wells
